Straight Man Advanced Fancy Pants

The rules for formal wear are not completely, er, black and white. Follow closely and exercise extreme caution; you can go terribly, terribly wrong here. Imagine MC Hammer at an awards show (if he got invited to awards shows).
Wear a dinner jacket with color.
Traditional white or ivory dinner jackets are not the only elegant choice. I put a straight guy in a pink jacket and he looked delicious.
Find accessories that relate to an interest or hobby.
This is very dangerous territory, but there are very nice, Wasp-ish old-school waistcoats—vests, that is—with tasteful hunting motifs and the like.
Dress your pocket with a beautiful handkerchief.
White is standard and will serve you well, but you can try a sassy paisley, check, or dot.
Wear sleek—but not stupid—braces.
They do more than hoist your pants into the crack of your butt; they complete a look. But did you read the part about “not stupid”?
Step out in velvet slippers.
Velvet slippers will certainly draw a distinction between the formal and the everyday. Try monograms or any other embroidered message. (Note: This is something of advanced couture maneuver. Not for the fainthearted.)
Go for the haute urban-cowboy look.
Wear a denim jacket underneath yourtuxedo jacket for a really crazy twist. I just made that one up.
Is it okay to rent a tux?
Sure, if you’re the type who’d feel comfortable buying a new liver from a vending machine. People! If you have the occasion to wear a tuxedo, it’s worth investing in one. They don’t have to be pricey and they will never go out of style.
