A Rounding off Hair Shape for long, single-length styles

Written on April 8, 2009 – 11:07 pm | by dodo

Oval end cuts offer an interesting shape for long, single-length styles, and they also provide more lift because they have less weight on the sides of the hair. The oval shape also provides a welcome styling change without losing any length at the bottom — something that’s extremely important to many people who’ve spent years growing their long locks.

Because oval cuts can be a little trickier for the beginning haircutter, you need to always make sure that your guideline slopes up at the same angle on both sides of the hair. Check the angle and length when you first cut your guide, and then recheck these two elements every third time you drop a section of hair. This technique keeps your cut on target, and it prevents unnecessary corrections that could mean removing several inches of length.

To do an oval end cut, follow these steps.

1. Pin the hair up in the appropriate sections

Drop a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch guide that will dictate the length and angle of the style and comb this thin layer straight down the back.

2. Cut the hair from the center of the back to each corner in a curving fashion as shown in Figure 6-6.

Continue with the rest of the steps when you’re happy with the oval shape you’ve created for your guide.

3. Drop a 1/2-inch horizontal parting from the back section that’s directly above your guide.

4. Follow the guide line — the ends of your guide — that should be visible beneath this section of hair and trim the hair into an oval shape.

5. Continue dropping horizontal 1/2-inch partings until the entire back of the haircut has been completed.

6. To begin cutting the sides, make a 1/2-inch horizontal parting on one side section right next to the bottom hairline.

7. Comb this hair straight down the back and trim according to your original guide.

Continue parting and cutting ‘/inch horizontal partings until both sides have been cut.
