Fashion Style Survival and Clothes Fitting Journey

The power’s now in your corner of the change room.
Know thyself.’ It’s age-old advice and, in the context of the right choices in fashion, it couldn’t be more fitting.
Getting to know yourself begins with close scrutiny — not only of your physical self, but also of your buying habits.
Body Figure
How often have you wanted to look taller and slimmer? How many times have you bemoaned the fact that you have very wide shoulders and would do anything to make them look smaller? Through the years I have come to realise that women put themselves under huge pressure to achieve what they perceive is a perfect figure. I’m sure you will agree with me that the perfect body shape is a myth — perfect for whom, perfect for what? ‘Perfect for you,’ is the only answer.
What about the closet wars? Have you ever looked at yourself in a mirror and known there’s something wrong with what you’re wearing, but not been sure what the problem is? Or dithered about what shoes to wear with a new pair of pants?
The good news is you don’t need a magic wand or a surgeon’s scalpel to achieve a perfect body, and you don’t need a vast array of garments to have a wardrobe that works. Fashions come and go, hemlines rise and fall and your body may change shape. All you need to understand is what styles work for you.
Begin by looking at yourself in the mirror and forgetting about what is underneath your outfit. It can be very difficult to look in a mirror objectively, as we tend to be far too critical about our bodies. But the mirror need not always be your enemy. If your faults are concealed correctly, who’s to know? More importantly, you will no longer feel self-conscious.
Throughout this section we take a close but fair look at your body, pinpointing your ‘erroneous’ zones and helping you solve the problems they present. Then we point out your assets and help you highlight those. We show you how to look fashionable and elegant according to your height and shape and the fashion season. When you’ve introduced yourself to the real you, you’ll be ready for our Fashion Notebook, which is a helpful style guideline you can refer to when shopping for clothes. No longer will you have to rely on the advice of a sales assistant; the power’s in your corner of the change room.
Many image consultants work with a figure analysis system that classifies you as pear-shaped, an hourglass, round and so on. I don’t work with this system and I’ll tell you why. Let’s take two women with a pear shape to their figure. They are both identical in height but the one woman is flat-chested and the other woman has a very full bust. Can they wear the same styles? No, they are very different from one another, even if they are both pear-shaped!
You are about to establish exactly which styles suit your individual body shape.
Lengths and Proportions
I also take into account lengths and proportions, all vital in achieving the correct image. This two-part fashion formula should be the basis of your calculations. Let me give you a small example. The most slimming colour on earth is black. Yes? But what if you have wide hips and the simple black shift you’ve chosen is too short for you or too snug about the hips? No amount of black will save you from a style that makes you look plump and short.
Once you have completed this section you will know exactly which jacket, sleeve, skirt and pant lengths suit you. You’ll be well on your way to taking the stress out of dress. You will realise the full potential of your appearance and experience a sense of renewed self- confidence.
