Improving on ‘perfect’. In every wardrobe, there’s one magical outfit that makes you look slim. Whenever you wear it, people constantly comment on your ‘weight loss’. It’s really not magic at all but a clever illusion. It’s simply the right silhouette.

We all hear about the ‘perfect’ figure. What a misnomer! For whom is this shape perfect? An adolescent girl, a ballet dancer, an athlete, a woman of 60? ‘Perfect’ is a manufactured ideal. We’re healthily sceptical when we hear the term ‘perfect relationship’ but seem to put ourselves under unnecessary pressure to achieve a ‘perfect’ figure or style that is simply unattainable. I say hold on to that sceptical thought about ‘perfection’ and be realistic about your assets and your problem areas.

Yes, there is always room for self-improvement. That goes for presentation skills, efficiency at work and knowledge — so why not appearance? I understand the despair of a woman with an over-generous bosom or full knees. But I also know how to do something about making problems disappear in the flash of a hem!

Coming up next in this section is a clever way to bring out the best in you. Call it the mini and maxi theory; minimise your faults, maximise your assets.

Not every style will suit you, but within the fashion season there will be plenty of styles from which to choose. If short jackets are fashionable and they suit you, wear them. If they don’t, don’t wear them. Stick to reality rather than fall foul of a fad. A word of advice: if your analysis notes suggests no bands across your hips, that means no bands whatsoever — not on the end of a jacket, no welt at the end of a jersey, no leather bomber jacket with a band and no sash tied across your body. All bands are banned!

It’s human nature to try to hide faults but sometimes you ‘throw out the babe with the bathwater’. Cover up completely and you may be hiding assets at the same time.

The correct fit of your garment is vital. It is not unusual to be one size on the top half of your body and another size on the bottom. These days, most outfits are sold as separates so you have a choice of sizes. If you are one size on the top half of your body and a bigger size on the bottom half of your body, you should buy the bigger size to make the outfit work for you. You are, in effect, two different sizes.

If splitting sizes doesn’t work, add a magical word to your vocabulary: alteration! Correct fit is the key trick to looking one size smaller. Jacket sleeves that hang past your knuckles can make your hand look shorter. A shirt that fits perfectly across your shoulders but is too generous around the bust and waist can make you look several kilograms heavier. I can also guarantee that if you are wearing a size too small, you will look one size bigger. Therefore, if your waist is smaller than what your hip size dictates, buy what will accommodate your hips and have the waist altered to fit.

If you try on a skirt that has a slit in the front that shows off your knees and these are not your best assets, stitch the slit closed to just below the knee. Your knees `disappear’ as a fault and you will have highlighted the shape of your calves instead.

Don’t let the alteration put you off buying the outfit. It may be a nuisance at times but it is worth the money and effort. Whether it’s changing a button, shortening or lengthening a hemline, or taking out or adding shoulder pads, it could make a crucial difference to your overall appearance and will certainly help boost your self-esteem.

If you see an outfit in a shop window that has a body stocking as part of the ensemble, don’t be deterred if you don’t like the body stocking. Shop with an eraser in your mind and rub out whatever you don’t feel comfortable with. Look for an alternative — replace the body stocking with a camisole. The overall look will be the same.

Before walking out of the front door, you should do what I call the three-point turn. Stand in front of a mirror and check your appearance from the front, side and back. Only when you are happy with what you see, can you walk out of the front door.
