Women Clothing Lengths & Proportions

Do you have a full-length mirror? If not, invest in one — you must be able to see yourself from head to toe in order to establish the ideal length and correct proportions. Once you have bought your mirror, you’ll appreciate how much difference getting the right proportions can make.
You may be wearing the right colour, style and fabric, but if the length and proportion of your outfit are incorrect for your height and shape, you will not look your best. If you buy a garment that is the incorrect length, have it altered to fit before you wear it. Take off your shoes when checking your correct lengths. If your proportion and legs look good without shoes, then imagine what they will look like with them on!
JACKET LENGTH
SHORT JACKET
It ends in line with your waistband or up to 4 cm below your waistband. You should only wear this style if you have a flat tummy, good hips and a good bottom. A short jacket works best with a skirt at knee length or with pants. It looks strange with a short or very long skirt as it makes the entire top half of your body look short-waisted and your legs look very long, even if they’re not.
MEDIUM JACKET
This length should end just below the widest part of your hips. You should only wear this style if your hips allow you to. It works best with a shorter skirt or a skirt at knee length. You can get away with wearing a medium jacket with a calf-length skirt, but it tends to make you look short-waisted, even if you are not.
LONG JACKET
Everyone can wear a long jacket, but the perfect length will vary for each individual. In order to determine your best length, measure the distance from the top of your shoulder (where your arm joins your shoulder) to the floor. Take your shoes off to do this as you do not want your heel height to interfere with the end result. You then divide your measurement in half and, voila, you have your best jacket length. Your body will now look perfectly in proportion, even if it’s not.
Example: If your measurement from shoulder to floor is 1.50 m (5 ft), your best jacket length is 75 cm (2 if 6 in).
This is often referred to as the 7/8th look. This length only works for women who are taller than 1.65 m (5 if 5 in) because it can make the top half of your body look very long and your legs very short in comparison. An extra long jacket co-ordinates best with a short or knee-length skirt or very tapered pants. It looks strange with a long skirt as it makes the top half of your body look long and the bottom half short.
FASHION NOTEBOOK
You might not want to walk around with a tape measure when you go shopping, so find a point on your body (such as your wedding ring or the end of your small finger) that is in line with your correct jacket length. You now have an easy reference point.
SLEEVELESS Lengths
`Sleeveless’ means no sleeve or an extended sleeve. Not everyone can wear this length and you should avoid it if the tops of your arms are not firm.
SHORT SLEEVE
A short sleeve should end halfway between your shoulder and your elbow.
This sleeve ends halfway between your elbow and wrist bone. Avoid this length if you have long arms because it will make them look even longer.
LONG SLEEVE
If the sleeve ends at the widest part of your hand, it is too long, making your hands and hips look wider. A long sleeve should end just below the end of your wrist bone.
