SKIRT Lengths
When establishing your best skirt lengths, stand with both feet together and turn one leg out to the side so you can see the shape of your legs, from the front and the side. Then use the following guide.
THIGH LENGTH
You should only wear this length if your knees and legs are slim and shapely. Your hemline should end approximately 4 cm (1.5 in) to 6 cm (2.5 in) above the top of your kneecap or higher, if your thighs allow you to.
You should only wear this length if your knees and legs are slim and shapely. Avoid this length if you have full or heavy calves — rather choose a longer skirt length. To establish your best length, slowly drop the hemline of a skirt by sliding it over your knees until your particular problem area disappears.
The correct length is at the very end of your calf muscle. Do not wear it across the middle of your calf because it is the widest part of your leg from your knee down. If you are shorter than 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in), don’t wear a top tucked into a calf-length skirt. It will make your body look short and your legs long in comparison. Wear a longer top to create the best proportions.
You can wear this length if you are 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in) or taller. If you are short, choose a dress with a continuous line from shoulder to floor for height and slimness. If you want to wear an ankle-length skirt, ensure that the style is a long, shaped skirt and not a wide, flared skirt as this will make you look shorter. Avoid wearing a blouse tucked into an ankle-length skirt because it creates the impression that you are short-waisted. Wear a longer top with a longer skirt for the best proportions.
FASHION NOTEBOOK
Always wear a slight heel when wearing a calf-length or ankle-length hemline, especially if you are short.
Women worry about their skirts riding up when they sit down. This will not happen if your skirt fits you properly. It will only ride up if your skirt is too tight.
PANT LENGTHS
Current fashion has seen the revival of the Capri pant and culottes. Unless you have long slim legs or well-shaped legs, be careful of choosing trend over common sense. If you want to minimise your problem areas, use these guidelines to help you work out the correct pant proportions.
SHORTS
Your best length depends on the shape of your knee. If you have great knees, you can wear this length above your knee. If your knees are not your best asset, wear this length just below your knee — that is, if your calves allow you to.
THREE-QUARTER LENGTH
This length should just reach the lower end of your calf muscle and not stop over the widest point of your calf, as that would make it look very wide. The correct shoe style for this length is very important.
This length should end just above your ankle bone. But you cannot wear it with a closed shoe because it will look as if your pants have shrunk!
STANDARD LENGTH
How do you decide whether a pair of pants is too long, too short, or just right?
When trying on pants, take your shoes off. If the pants are bunching around your ankle, it doesn’t mean that you must wear a higher heel, it means the pants are too long.
Most tailors will ask you to put your shoes on and alter the pants so the hemline covers the back of your shoe by 3 cm (1.2 in). There’s a small problem though — the length will be perfect for that particular pair of shoes, but what about other pairs of shoes? I suggest you leave your shoes off, then make sure the tailor shortens the pants in line with the floor. The hemline will then always cover the back of any shoe you wear. This will also allow you to wear the pants with all your shoes, giving you more flexibility.
