Ring Tones

Rings have come to represent romance, special occasions, a lifelong investment and glamour. (The De Beers diamond mining company slogan ‘A Diamond is forever’ has been rated one of the best of the twentieth century.) Freed from the constraints of crowns and sceptres, they adorn the hands, necks and ears of women who today feel liberated enough to wear them with anything from denim to Dior.

Classic settings flatter any woman’s features, but while a beautifully designed ring might catch your eye, think about which style suits you best. You may not know the back — or front — of your hand as well as you think you do. The shape of your hand and the width of your fingers determine which style best suits you. Of course the stone may be a sapphire, a ruby or a simple amethyst, but the design principles remain.

Fashion House

Here are some practical guidelines to show you how to choose the right style for the shape of your hand.

Wild, Short Hands

Choose narrower bands or stones with an oval shape to make your hands look longer and slimmer.

  • Wide, thick or cluster rings will make your hands look shorter and wider.
  • Avoid a ring on your pinkie that will draw attention to this point of your hand, making it look even wider.

Thin, Narrow Hands

  • Avoid wide, thick rings. They are too heavy for the shape of your hand.
  • Avoid small, overly delicate styles as they are ‘lost’ on hands this shape.
  • Invest in medium-sized styles.
  • Balanced Hands
  • Lucky you! You can wear whatever style you choose.

Fashion Tips

If you’re on holiday and sand and suntan lotion have clogged the clasp and stones in your setting, clean your ring with toothpaste. (Yes, it really works!) Use an old softtoothbrush and gently clean the rings in a circular motion. You can also leave yourrings in freshly squeezed lemon juicefor 10 minutes, then rinse themthoroughly. (Don’t do this if your ring contains pearls.)
