6 Each item that you purchase should co-ordinate with at least three other items in your existing wardrobe. Don’t buy a white shirt to co-ordinate with a black skirt, black pants and black jeans (because top stays the same). Be clever, buy a black skirt that will look really different when wearing it with your matching black tailored jacket to work, with a silver silk evening blouse to a cocktail party and with a casual jacket, T-shirt and jeans shopping on a Saturday morning (because top changes). This way you are co-ordinating the same skirt with three completely different tops and you are also covering all lifestyles. It is more versatile to mix and match separates, so try to limit the number of dresses in your wardrobe.
7 If you wonder why you always look the same, perhaps you have lots of prints and few plains. It is easier to mix and match plains but very difficult to mix and match prints. Invest in more plains than prints. This strategy will stretch your wardrobe’s life. A good selection is 70% plains and 30% prints.
8 Work with a basic foundation that best represents your lifestyle. By basic foundation, I mean invest in the essential items that will co-ordinate with one another and basic garments that don’t easily date. For example: a classic black jacket and skirt, a white shirt and a pair of jeans.
9 Select a good cross-section of basic garments, fashionable basics and fashion. If 90% of your wardrobe consists of high fashion with no basics to fall back on, your wardrobe will never coordinate. Here is a good representation of what your wardrobe should consist of:
- Basics are items that don’t date, like a black suit, white cotton shirt or pair of classic denims. A red blazer, paisley shirt or stone twin-set could also be considered a basic item. Your wardrobe should consist of 50% basics.
- Fashionable basics are items that are very fashionable for a particular season — for example, a black and white spotted blouse. You could wear it for the season, but still wear it in three years time because spots don’t really date. Your wardrobe should consist of 30% fashionable basics.
- Fashion refers to items that last for a maximum of two to six months. Do you remember the knickerbocker pants from the 1970s and the puffball skirt from the 1980s? Yes, they do ‘return’, but never in quite the same style, so be careful of storing clothes for decades. (Unless it is your grandmother’s black jet-bead 1920s evening dress!) Your wardrobe should consist of 20% fashion.
It is important to update your wardrobe constantly but don’t spend your entire salary on the update. You’ll soon have hundreds of clothes but no wardrobe! Combine classic basic garments with a variety of the season’s new colours, styles and accessories and make your wardrobe work for you.
10 Update your existing wardrobe from season to season. One of my favourite articles of clothing is a tailored, single- breasted black jacket I purchased many years ago. It cost me a small fortune, but I just had to have ‘it. The jacket had plastic buttons when I bought it, which I changed to gold Chanel buttons. Each season, I change the look — buttons one season, braiding the next — or switch from a fur collar to an animal print collar.
