Are you tired of facing the day ahead with nothing to wear, and yet you seem to be ’starving in the face of plenty’ with cupboards full of clothes? And, with all that choice, do you end up looking the same every day? Here are some great wardrobe planning solutions to make your wardrobe really work for you.
10 Golden Rules
1 You should always have a selection of hot, cold and basic colours in your wardrobe in order for your wardrobe to co-ordinate successfully.
- Hot colours are warm colours, for example: red, peach, pumpkin, purple, lilac, coral, pink, burgundy.
- Cold colours are cool colours, for example: blue, emerald green, turquoise, midnight blue, bottle green.
Basic colours are neutrals that work with all the hot and cold colours, for example: navy, black, white, grey, cream, brown, stone, tan.
2 Your wardrobe should consist of approximately 60% hot and cold colours and 40% basic colours. You must invest in basic colours because without them your wardrobe will never mix and match. If you don’t like hot and cold colours, buy basics in different shades and tones, like stone, white, navy, brown and grey. I suggest a touch of colour, though, as it always brightens up your day.
3 Too many basic colours could also be a problem. If you have three black jackets, two navy ones and three brown ones, you only have basic colours and no hot and cold colours to make your wardrobe look different. You can now go shopping with a clear idea of what you need, and buy the correct missing items.
4 Always invest in more tops than bottoms. You are always guaranteed to look different — here’s why. Your eye generally focuses on someone’s face and upper body, so 80 % bottoms and 20 % tops gives the impression of a wardrobe lacking in versatility. Tip: Buy five tops for every one bottom. Which of the following scenarios make more sense?
Scenario A: You buy one top for every five bottoms.
Scenario B: You buy one bottom for every five tops.
In both scenarios you have a total of five outfits, but you always look the same in Scenario A because the top half of your body doesn’t change day in and day out. You look different every day in Scenario B because your top changes. Obviously you are not going to wear the same bottom for five days in a row, but there’s a clever discipline in the principle. No one really notices what you wear on the bottom half of your body; they remember the top half. Why does a man have one or two suits in his wardrobe and always manage to look different? He changes his shirt and his tie. Always invest more in tops and less in bottoms.
5 70% of your wardrobe should therefore consist of items you wear on the top half of your body (blouses, shirts, jackets, jerseys, T-shirts) and 30% should consist of items for the bottom half of your body (skirts, pants, walking shorts, jeans).

hot and cool colors do not define the tone. Example: a red that has a blue undertone is cool, but if the red has a yellow undertone, it looks more orangy and is considered warm.
Some people are not aware of these differences.
If you choose the wrong tones you do not look good especially colors that reflect on your face. So you should wear only tops that compliment your skintone..
