Perfectly Packed Wearing Clothes

You’re off on an extended business or a holiday and you pack as if you’re emigrating! Be honest. How much of what you pack do you actually wear? 25%? 50%? You should wear at least 80%! Yes, it is possible. Travel is about efficiency. Yet despite how frequently some people travel, and how well they manage a complicated itinerary, few seem to manage the art of successful packing. There’s a discipline to packing well and it starts before you’ve slipped the first shirt off a hanger into your suitcase. There are three words that get you into a lot of trouble when you pack: just in case! Don’t say these three words. Rather ask yourself these three very important questions.

Where am I going?

If you are going to the Caribbean on holiday it is unlikely that you will need to pack jerseys and heavy jackets.

Fashion House

How long will I be away?

Make a note of how many days you will be away. You’ll need two outfits per day (day wear and evening wear). If you are going away for two weeks you need 28 outfits.

What will my lifestyle be on that particular trip?

If you are going on a business trip you are not going to need shorts and T-shirts. If you are going on a leisure trip you don’t need suits. What is the accommodation like: bungalows or five- star luxury?

Pack according to percentages:

For a business trip, pack 90% business and 10% leisure.

WHAT TO PACK

Lay your clothes and accessories out on the bed before you pack so that you can clearly see what you are packing.

  • Start with your basic foundation. Choose a two-piece suit (be it smart or casual) in a basic colour like black or navy.
  • Add your other basic bottoms.
  • Then add your tops, the plains first and then the prints.
  • Add your sleepwear, lingerie and towel.
  • Pack your shoes and accessories last.

PACKING

  • More tops, fewer bottoms
  • Remember the ‘x 3 principle’
  • More plains, fewer prints
  • Don’t duplicate

THE ‘MAGICIAN’S’ BAG

My packing tips are based on the travel bag, which measures 80 cm by 50 cm (2 if 8 in by 1 ft 8 in) (don’t splutter at the size) and will accommodate your needs for a two-week trip. If you are packing for a longer trip you will obviously need a bigger suitcase. Having on-board luggage only when you’re flying makes very good sense if you’re on a business trip. At the very least, it reduces your waiting time at airports.

HOW TO PACK

Pack your jackets first, folded in half (lengthways), into one half of the bag. Alternate shoulder pads to save space. If you are packing into a larger bag, pack jackets flat.

  • Follow the same procedure with tops and bottoms.
  • Fold pants in half and lay across length of the bag.
  • Pack shoes (toe to heel) in shoe bags and pack into corners of the bag.
  • Pack lingerie in the spaces between the shoes.
  • Don’t roll your belts into a tight ball but wrap them around the inside of your bag.
  • Pack a steam iron.

Cosmetics should always be packed in a separate vanity case to prevent leaked lotions or perfumes from damaging your clothes.
