15 tips on how to slim down your Dressing/ Suits/ Clothing Wardrobe

If you’re suffering from a new kind of ‘battle of the bulge’ - not on your waistline but in your wardrobe - follow these important guidelines when sorting and tidying your wardrobe:

You have to have a well-organised wardrobe. It’s so much easier to decide on an outfit when you can see it clearly and it’s in wearable condition. Nothing is more frustrating than pulling out a crumpled shirt that you spent hours ironing in the first place.

Divide your wardrobe in two sections: tops on the one side, bottoms on the other side. This way you can gauge if the percentages of tops versus bottoms is correct. You are also able to co-ordinate your wardrobe very easily (provided you have the right combinations).

Don’t divide your wardrobe into a ’smart’ section and a ‘casual’ section. Hang all your jackets together, all your shirts together and all your bottoms together. You are then able to mix and match easily, smart with casual and vice versa.

Fashion House

If you hang your suits together, you’ll always wear them together. Hang jackets and tops on the one side of your wardrobe and bottoms on the other side of your wardrobe. You will find combinations that you never thought would have gone together.

Don’t hang more than one garment on a hanger. You can never find what you are looking for.

Look after your clothes. Throw out all wire hangers, as they not only ruin the shape of your garments but cause creasing. If you live near the sea, wire hangers often go rusty, staining your clothes. Try not to use too many different styles of hangers, as your clothing will hang unevenly. Use good quality hangers throughout your wardrobe. I suggest wooden or moulded plastic hangers. For a stylish touch and uniformed look, choose one colour hanger. Or if you do want to remind yourself of a summer or winter-weight jacket, hang summery clothes on bright hangers and winter clothes on dark hangers.

Fasten all zips and buttons so clothes do not crease or snag.

Don’t hang knitwear, as it loses its shape. Always fold and pack it onto shelves. Remember to air it fairly regularly to check for fish moths.

Keep your belts neatly together on hooks or in a drawer near your bags and shoes. Don’t throw your belts haphazardly into your cupboard or roll them up into a tight ball. They will eventually crack and the buckles will become scratched.

Don’t hang scarves on hangers, as they tend to slide off. This is frustrating, especially when you’re in a rush. Fold scarves and place them flat. (If they tend to slither, consider keeping them in transparent containers.)

Don’t throw your shoes in a pile on the floor of your cupboard, but keep them well organised and polished, as they can cost a lot of money. Pack them on shoe racks or store them in shoeboxes with a photograph of the shoe on the outside of the box for easy identification. They will last much longer this way. You can pack tissue paper into the toes of shoes stored for a season if you want them to keep their shape.

Pack all your socks, underwear, gloves and tights into drawers or transparent containers so you can quickly find what you need!

Put aside clothing that needs to be altered, and get it done immediately.

Throw out everything you haven’t worn in two years. Anything that doesn’t fit or flatter must go! All fashion fads and impulse buys you don’t wear should get the chop. Say goodbye to styles that you ‘might fit into one day’ and styles that don’t work for your lifestyle. The style might come back into fashion, but in an altered state. You’ll simply look outdated.

Last, but not least, please don’t throw out clothes you don’t wear and don’t want to sell to second-hand shops. Donate them to someone who really needs them or to charities, such as the Salvation Army, who put your clothes to very good use.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ORGANISATION

  • You will always look different.
  • There will be no duplications.
  • Your colours will co-ordinate.
  • You can dress for any function in a flash.
  • It is cost-effective, as no garments remain unused in your wardrobe.
  • You can work with the minimum to achieve the maximum.
  • You will know exactly what you have in your wardrobe and shopping will become a pleasure.
  • It will eliminate impulsive buying.
  • You can sleep in an extra 15 minutes!
