Seasonal Fashion and Clothing, seeing Yourself in Right Colours

Some people are genetically on the cusp of two seasons, and holding the colours under your face will help you see which season is best. You may look pretty good in some colours from one season, but on the whole look better in another palette. Never judge by one colour alone.

This test is based on comparision. You should compare one colour against another, perhaps several times, to see which is better.

In the box following, locate the two seasons you are trying to decide between.

To make the decision:

  • Gather the colours of the two seasons in question. Any solid-colour fabric will do (shirts, towels, scarves, a child’s T-shirt).
  • Give yourself a close shave so you can really see your skin tone.
  • Find a place with bright natural daylight or bring a mirror to a window. Fluorescent light changes the colour of both your skin tone and the fabric colours.
  • Ask for some outside opinions. People tend to favour their own colours, so ask more than one person in order to avoid individual bias.
  • Hold the colours under your face, using the combinations suggested above. Place the two test colours on top of each other and hold them under your face. Look at the effect of the top colour for a few seconds, then peel it off so you can see the effect of the second colour. Repeat several times. Then go onto the next two colours. Remember, this test is based on comparison. One colour may look all right, but the other will be better.

There are two rules.

1. Be objective. Try not to be influenced by your favourite and least favourite colours.

2. Look at your face, not at the colour.

Here’s what to look for as you compare the colours under your face.

Right Colour

The colour smooths and clarifies your face. It minimises the beard line, shadows and circles under the eyes. It makes wrinkles or lines at the side of the mouth and nose blend smoothly into your face. It brings out a healthy glow in your skin. It makes your eyes sparkle. Your face stands out, pushing the colour into the background. The colour harmonises with your face.

Wrong Colour

The colour may make your face look pale, sallow or ‘dirty’. It will accentuate a heavy beard, lines, wrinkles or shadows under the eyes. It will accentuate any blotches or scars. It dulls your eyes. It may age your face, especially if you are over thirty. The colour will look too strong or too weak, in either case making your face fade into the background. The colour does not harmonise with your face.

Here are the questions most frequently asked.

  • Can I be more than one season?

Not really. Some men are on the cusp of two seasons, but with testing, one palette will prove to be better than the other. Even if more than one colour chart appeals to you, you are doing yourself a disservice to mix the palettes. Each chart is designed to create an automatically co-ordinated wardrobe, so ‘borrowing’ from different palettes defeats the system. Remember, your genes determine your skin tone, hair colour and eye colour, which in turn determine the colours that look best on you. Your best colours are not a matter of taste, but of fact.

  • Does my season change with a tan?

No. Your genetically determined skin tone doesn’t change; it simply darkens with a tan or fades somewhat with age. The same seasonal palette will always be best for you.

  • When you are tanned you can wear ‘wrong’ colours more successfully, but why do it? You’ll ruin your image and your wardrobe.
  • Does my season change when my hair gets grey?

No. However, once your hair is grey you may prefer to wear the lighter or softer colours from your palette. Your most flattering neutral colours will be those that harmonise with your hair — your season’s greys and blues.

Now that you’ve assessed your colour history, evaluated your colouring and possibly even tested yourself in colours, you should feel confident that you know your correct season. Now begins the pleasure of wearing your colours. Try out your season by wearing something you already own in your colours. The compliments you receive will confirm your choice.
