A Survival Wardrobe: Content, Colour, Lifestyle part 3

Casual Belt

Your casual belt may be leather, but it’s fine here to have a fabric belt, either plain or striped. If you decide on leather, choose a wider belt.

Casual Shoes

Any casual lace-ups will do here, depending on your comfort, age and lifestyle. Tennis shoes and boots fall into this category.

Around the House

Everyone needs ‘old’ clothes to wear at weekends, to paint the garage in or whatever, and most people already have plenty of these. The point is to keep only those items that are in your colours. You may be spending 90 per cent of your casual time in these clothes, so why look awful at home? T-shirts are inexpensive, so treat yourself to a new one and ditch all your bad ones.

Fashion House

Coat

Ideally you would buy a wool or cashmere coat in the dressiest neutral colour in your palette. This coat can also be worn for business. The lifestyle of most people has become increasingly casual during the past decade, so you may find that you can skip this purchase. A coat is a major investment, so if you do buy one, choose one in a classic style with no faddish details. You want this coat to last.

Trenchcoat

The trench-type coat is probably necessary for every man. It is a perfect business coat and raincoat, and it functions well enough in the evening, except on really formal occasions. Colour? Either the brown or the navy of your season.

Jacket

Choose a parka or sheepskin for cold weather; an anorak or any light weight jacket for warmer weather. Choose any colour from your palette. A neutral or basic colour will go with all your clothes, but a brighter colour may add some zip to your life.

Cold Weather

If you have cold winters, you will need gloves, a scarf and possibly a pull-on woollen cap. Buy the gloves and cap in neutrals to go with the coat or jacket you wear most often. The scarf can be solid, check or plaid in any colour from your palette.

Sports/Hobbies

If you have a hobby or sport — such as tennis, jogging, skiing, or swimming — that requires special attire, don’t forget to add these to your own personal survival list. Since shopping is so painful for some, you might as well pick up these needed items while shopping for everything else.

Personal

Obviously a man needs underwear for survival, but I am assuming that these personal items — plus pyjamas, dressing-gown and slippers — are already part of your wardrobe, and are replaced from time to time out of sheer necessity.

Finishing Touches

Dinner Suit

I have not included a dinner suit in the Survival List because most men rent one on the rare occasion it is needed.

Accessories

To complete your wardrobe you will need certain accessories. Be sure your leather goods, pocket handkerchief and other accessories are in colours from your palette. Why spoil the harmony of your total look with one off-key item?

Jewellery

Try to have your watch, rings, cuff links and any other jewellery or metals in the hue best for your season. As with your belt buckle, choose silver or silver-toned metals for Winter and Summer and gold or gold-toned metals for Autumn and Spring. If you are a Winter or Summer and feel you must wear gold, choose a toner that is subdued and not too yellow. A bright yellow gold will clash with everything you wear.
