Slacks

These are your dressy slacks. Buy a solid-colour darkish neutral in a wool or wool blend for winter, and a light to medium shade in a cotton-polyester blend for summer. These trousers must go with your jacket and should be either lighter or darker in order to make a good contrast. Winters and Summers will probably buy greys; Autumns and Springs tans and browns. Choose a plain style. These slacks can go to work or a party when worn with a jacket, or to a sporting event with a checked shirt and sweater.

Shirt 1

This is your basic daytime shirt which should be in your season’s white. (It’s worth the extra effort for Autumns and Springs to search for their harder-to-find shades of white. It really makes a difference!) Choose cotton or cotton-polyester with a button-down or plain collar. Button-downs are more casual. Summers and Springs could substitute a light blue shirt in this category.

Shirt 2

For dressier situations, buy a fine cotton, plain-collared shirt in white or a subtle colour from your palette. If the shirt is coloured, make sure it goes with both the suit and the jacket.

Shirt 3

Your third shirt is more casual and can be worn with your suit, your jacket and your slacks. Choose either a solid colour or a subtle check or stripe. If your jacket is patterned, you will have to make sure the pattern in this shirt is compatible, or stick to a solid-coloured shirt.

Tie I

Choose a solid tie in a deep basic colour to go with the suit, the jacket and all three shirts. If you have bought a patterned Shirt 3 containing several colours, make sure the solid tie picks up one of the colours in the shirt. When possible, you should pick out the tie first and then the patterned shirt to go with it.

Tie 2

This tie is patterned with a small repeat pattern, a stripe or a paisley, depending upon your personality. The background of this tie should be the red of your season or one of your deeper or brighter basic colours, with the pattern picking up the colour of your suit, your shirt or both.

Tie 3

Your -third tie should be striped. Most men can wear some form of stripe, bold or subtle, depending upon personality. Some portion of this tie must pick up the colour of your suit and, ideally, the colour of your shirt as well. If stripes are too severe for you, then buy one more tie from the Tie 2 category.

Belt

Select a leather belt in a dark neutral that harmonises with your season. Winters and Summers should find a silver-toned buckle, as silver is a cool colour that looks sharper with your palette. Autumns and Springs should choose a gold-toned buckle to harmonise best with your palettes.

Business/Dress Shoes

Depending on your personality, buy either leather lace-ups or dressy pull-ons. Choose a neutral colour, preferably the same as your belt. These shoes should go with your suit and slacks above.Don’t forget to buy mid-calf or knee-length dark socks so skin doesn’t show when you’re sitting down with your legs crossed.

Casual Slacks

These slacks are casual but not grubby. They can be corduroys, cotton-polyester blends or even a nice pair of jeans, depending upon your lifestyle. You can wear your jeans or corduroys with your jacket if you are a casual sort of man. It’s still best to buy your first pair of casual slacks in a neutral colour.

Casual Shirt

For winter choose a flannel shirt in a solid colour or with checks, a long-sleeved cotton knit shirt or whatever suits your fancy. For summer, a short-sleeved T-shirt will do fine. Now you can have more fun with the colours. Because you can wear Shirts 1 and 3 with your casual trousers, you can afford to be less conservative with this casual shirt. Most people need to have more than one casual shirt, whatever their lifestyles.

Sweater

Choose a favourite neutral or basic colour to go with your nice slacks, your casual slacks and all your shirts. The sweater can be a crewreck, V neck, or rollneck. In summer, a cotton knit or lightweight wool is always useful.

Shorts

These shorts are not for active sports but rather for comfortable, presentable wear in hot weather. They can be short, mid-thigh, or just above the knee, depending upon your personality, your age and your legs. Buy any neutral or basic colour or your season’s white. A solid is best, but a small check is fine as long as it goes with the short-sleeved cotton knit casual shirt. If the shorts are a solid colour you can wear them with Shirt 3 and partly roll the sleeves up.
