Do: Combine Compatible Fabrics

Fabric varies in three ways: weight, texture, and finish.

The weight of a fabric depends on its content and the density of its weave. The year-round wools are medium and thinner. Lighter weights are thin and may be wool, cotton, linen, or blends.

Texture is determined by the rough weave of a fabric. Knits, tweeds and corduroys are heavily textured. Worsteds, tightly woven wools, fine cotton and silk are generally smooth in texture.

Finish has to do with the sheen of fabrics. Finishes range from such flat matt finishes as a flannel suit, cloth shirt or a wool tie to the high sheen in a silk tie.

When combining the weight, texture and finish of a coat or suit, shirt and tie, keep likes with likes. Heavy goes with heavyish, boucle goes with matt, smooth goes with a sheen. A tweed jacket (boucle matt finish) goes with a knit (matt finish) wool tie, and a solid worsted suit (smooth) with a silk tie (sheen).

Fashion HouseHere are examples of appropriate fabric combinations.

With a lighter-weight, smooth-finish suit, it would be inappropriate to wear your heavy wool, loose-weave tie, even if the colour is right. The weight and texture are wrong. That suit may be worn with either a tightly woven lightweight wool tie or a silk tie.

Don’t: Mix Styles of Clothing

Clothing automatically has a style. It is dressy or casual, woodsy or executive, city or country, faddish or classic, depending on its colour, line, fabric and pattern. Obviously you would not wear a corduroy jacket with your pinstriped trousers. But there are subtler combinations that clash and ruin your image, too.

Colour that is bright tends to be sporty, casual or festive. Bright colours are only businesslike when used as accents, such as stripes in a tie. Pastels are fashion colours when worn in suits or jackets, but are conservative in business shirts. Dark colours are classic business and traditional country casual colours.

Patterns can be either conservative or sporty. Subtle patterns are classic, bold ones are sporty. Tartan, plaid, paisley and club tie patterns are sporty. Striped, polka-dot, and foulard patterns are more formal. However, some striped ties are casual and some paisleys are more formal, depending on their colours and their fabric.

Fabric is also dressy or casual. Knits and tweeds are sporty. Worsteds and silks are dressy. A silk shirt would never be worn with a knitted tie.

The cut or styling line of a garment determines a lot about its character. That is why a well-cut suit in a fine flat wool and conservative colour does not go with a cloth button-down shirt. The styles clash and so do the textures. The suit demands a clean line and a fine, smooth texture; the button-down has a chunky line and a rough texture.

Here is a summary of the dos and don’ts of successfuly combining your coat, shirt, and tie.

Do Buy only colours from your chart. Do Combine three solids.

Do Combine two solids with one pattern.

Do Combine one solid with two non-competing patterns.

Don’t Combine three patterns.

Do Strive for contrast.

Do Combine compatible fabrics.

Don’t Mix styles of clothing.

Now you know the rules for putting your clothes and your colours together, you are ready to begin refining your look and thinking about your personal style.
