Grooming, Accentuate the Positive

Once you have determined the general frame shape that is best for you, you can refine it even further to accentuate your best features and disguise your flaws.

If you have a long nose, choose glasses with a low bridge. A dark-coloured bridge is even more shortening.

If you have a short nose, a high, keyhole bridge in a light colour lengthens the appearance of your nose.

If your eyes are small or too close together, make them appear wider with a wide bridge. A clear bridge with coloured end pieces makes the illusion even stronger.

If your nose is wide or your eyes are wide set, choose a medium-weight dark-coloured bridge.

Going, Going, Gone: Bald can be beautiful too

If you have thinning hair or are bald, don’t despair. Yul Brynner and Telly Savalas have made baldness a symbol of virility, and Burt Reynolds, Sean Connery and others have shown that a hairpiece or transplant can be convincingly real. There are many options, and it is as important for you to know how to cut and take care of your hair as it is for a bushy-haired kid.

  • Keeping your hair short is the trick. Identify your facial shape and emphasise its assets. A good cut to create fullness is essential. Remember:
  • Keep thinning hair fairly short and always neatly trimmed. Long strands look sparse and accentuate baldness. Short, layered hair looks fuller than long hair.
  • Never part your hair over one ear and comb long strands over your bald spot. It only calls attention to your baldness and looks terrible when the wind blows. Really, bald is attractive if you will work with it instead of trying to cover it up.
  • If you have only a receding hairline, you can comb your hair forward. This does not look artificial, since some people wear their hair back to front anyway.
  • If you have just a few hairs on the top of your otherwise bald head, shave them off. It looks neater, smoother, and sexier and calls less attention to the top of your head.

Consider growing a moustache or a beard if your professional life permits. Facial hair can often balance baldness.

Grooming

Please don’t forget the details that ensure your attractiveness as a total person. Here’s a grooming checklist.

  • Hair clean and neat.
  • Teeth brushed; good breath.
  • Deodorant — make sure it’s still working.
  • Face shaved. (Watch for five o’clock shadow. Keep a razor at work.)
  • Fingernails clean and filed; cuticles trimmed.
  • Clothes clean, neatly pressed. (Check for hanging threads, loose buttons, sagging lining and split seams.)
  • Shirt cuffs and collars without frays.
  • Shoes polished, heels not worn.

You now have the tools to buy the best colours and clothing styles for you as well as a more organised approach to getting dressed.

Mix that with a great haircut, a neat and clean appearance, and you’ve got it all. Ready, set go, put your best look forward!
