Hair is something women universally complain about. ‘If only it were a different colour/had curls/was straight/thicker/or shiny.’ We have all had the experience of the disaster cut, the one that made you look like you were wearing somebody else’s hair. You wondered how you could possible live with it. That whimsical ‘new look’ takes months to grow back into something more recognisable, more comforting, more you.

Choosing a good hairstyle requires two things. First you need to know what will suit you: your face, your lifestyle, and, most importantly, the type of hair you have. Secondly, you need the help of a talented yet sympathetic stylist.

Hairstyle and Face Shape

Fashion HouseIf yours is a simple oval shape there’ll be lots of possibilities within the limits of the texture of your hair. For women with other shaped faces — square, oblong, round, etc — you are advised not to repeat the shape of your face but to create complementary width, softness or length where you need it.

For example, oblong faces will be emphasised and appear even longer with straight styles that end at the shoulder or below. It’s better to ‘break-up’ the extra length of these faces with angular or soft styles that create width at the sides and back.

Square faces, by contrast, have more width and less length than oblong faces. So opt for the minimum on the sides with layers on top to create height, and some length showing at the back to create length.

In selecting a style to complement your face, you will achieve a more balanced and interesting look. A lovely round face that has a full, round hairstyle just looks fat, not interesting. You make the most of your face by choosing a hairstyle that shows off its own uniqueness.

Hairstyle and Lifestyle

If you are unlikely to spend a half hour every day working with your hair it’s fruitless to choose styles that require a lot of care and crimping. Longer styles can be time-consuming if left free, but if attractively plaited, pulled-back or up can be as easy to care for as some of the shorter styles. Before choosing any new look be sure to discuss with your hairdresser how much time you want to spend daily in caring for your hairstyle.

  1. For naturally curly or permed hair. Great for all face shapes except those with a wide forehead.
  2. A terrific cut for hair of all textures except very thick. Can be worn smooth, parted, scrunched or allowed to fall naturally into a striking fringe.
  3. For naturally curly or permed hair. Fills out oblong faces and those with a wide forehead. Best avoided if you have a square or round face.
  4. Hair of average thickness required for this style, as well as with some body. If hair is fine consider a body perm or jetting to achieve fullness. Great on most face shapes except square.
  5. For fine to medium thick hair. Good for oval and round faces.
  6. Volume like this on medium length hair requires a lot of mousse after drying hair with head bent forward. For natural, body- waved or permed hair.
  7. A modern cut for busy women. Avoid only if you have a long neck.
  8. Medium length hair loosely pinned packed in a clip. A great way to transform your look for the evening.
  9. Average to long length hair with medium to thick texture. A stunning style for most face shapes except the oblong.
  10. Long full hair for the woman with lots of time. Avoid if you are petite or average height — best on tall women.
