The Angular Woman’s Clothes Options

Now let’s consider a woman who has a straight, angular body. She wants to change her look, and goes shopping for a dress to go under some of her jackets. After some deliberation, she buys a silk one with a gathered waist. Now, no matter how much she has spent on the dress, it will look inexpensive and unsuccessful on her because such a soft fabric does not compliment her straight body. She would look much more interesting in a tightly woven material, such as a silk-linen blend or fine wool crepe. Also, identifying a waistline which, in essence, she doesn’t have doesn’t do her figure justice. A better choice would be a chemise style or a coat- dress, with no waist emphasis.

If you have decided that your body shape is essentially Angular, then here are some tips on selecting styles that make the most of your features.

Silhouettes

Simple and unconstructed • Straight lines • Square shoulders (regardless of padding) • Waist-definition (only if you have one)

Tailored and tapered designs

Fashion HouseFabrics

  • Crisp cottons and linens • Wool that retains its shape, e.g. gaberdine, twill, tweed • Tightly woven knits and jerseys • Silk that’s stiff (e.g. raw silk), blended with linen • Blends of natural and man-made fibres with body, i.e. which don’t drape excessively

Details

  • Sharp lapels, e.g. peaked or notched; asymmetrical • Edge to edge closings • Lapel-less jackets • Minimal darts or tucks at the waist (unless yours is defined) • Stiff or pressed-down pleats • Straight, cross-over, wrap-around, slit, knife-pleat skirts

Patterns

  • Stripes of all widths • Fine to moderate polka dots • Plaids or geometric weaves • Modest paisleys • Abstracts that are more geometric in shape

The Curvy Woman’s Clothes Options

If you select styles that are complimentary to your build, you will look your best, feel comfortable and even look slimmer. Consider the woman with a very feminine, curvy body: a full bust line, nice waist and full hips. In shopping for a business suit she buys a very smart Chanel-style with a short body jacket in a crisp wool gaberdine. The suit is the right size, and she has chosen a great colour for her. But she doesn’t look good in it, because both the style and the fabric are wrong for her body type. Stiff fabrics, straight lines in jackets and skirts, and boxy cuts, make a woman with a soft, curvy shape look chunky and shapeless. Her lovely bust line, trim waist and feminine hips are all lost in a style like this.

Women with curvy shapes, and wanting to make the most of themselves, should select from the following:

Silhouettes

  • Defined at the waist • Rounded and flowing designs • Softly unconstructed shapes • Raglan or softly set-in shoulders; not very square • Easy movement in skirts

Fabrics

  • Jersey (cotton, wool, silk, blend) • Silk crêpe de Chine • Silk-like micro-fibres • Stone-washed silkWool crêpe • Fine flannel
  • Boucle • Lambswool • Chambray • Soft brocades

Details

  • Draped collars, such as shawl collars • Lapel-less jackets • Soft necklines • Cinched waists; belted designs • Soft gathers, inverted pleats at waistline • Gored, bell, sarong, dirndl skirts

Patterns

  • Paisleys • Soft abstracts • Polka dots • Multi-coloured weaves (not square) • Abstract florals (flowers generally aren’t professional)

The Softened Straight Woman’s Clothes Options

Many women are a combination of angles and curves; in CMB parlance they are a Soft Straight type. These women have very straight shoulders but a definite waist and a curvy bottom. They need to follow some of the advice for the Angular women in silhouettes and details but use the softer fabrics recommended for the Curvy women. They don’t need the same amount of softness as the Curvy women, nor the really crisp look so wonderful on Angular women. If you are a Soft Straight woman, it is really over the waist and bottom that you want the ease and movement, so wear the same skirts and trousers as your Curvy friends.

The Full-Figured, Round-bodied Woman’s Clothes Option

This figure can look wonderful at work or at play. She just has to be very selective in putting her look together. If this is your body shape, you are probably fullest in the waist (often this problem is exacerbated by you being shorter in the waist, but you may have terrific long legs!). You need simple styles that drape from the shoulder in a straight line, distracting the eye away from your fullest point, the waist. So, follow the advice of the Angular women but use fabrics that move (e.g. those advised for Curvy women).
