What Dress Wearing Image Works Best? Sexy or Professional Suit?

The previous examples illustrate how companies and individuals have to rationalise what they feel is appropriate for best projecting the corporate identity through the personal image of their staff. I have talked about very different organisations with very different cultures. To understand better what some of these different images might be, here are some guidelines I use.

Play it Smart

An organisation’s size greatly influences the guidelines for personal image of the employees. Large companies, with more formal systems for communication and management hierarchy, lend themselves to the finest in traditional business dress, the formal business suit, good grooming and appropriate accessories.

There are, of course, exceptions — companies, for instance, whose organic growth came from a different business culture to begin with. Two notable examples familiar to many are the Body Shop and the Virgin Group (part of which Richard Branson eventually sold). The founders of both companies are iconoclastic, and despite being highly successful business people, they challenge many traditional business values and practices. Anita Roddick and Richard Branson are products of the ’swinging 1960s’ generation and have ignored established business conventions. They don’t have to play by the rules. They have made it in spite of them.

With their success and leadership they might even help to relax standards of business dress. But until their ‘devil may care’, anti-establishment images are accepted by more companies you are advised to follow the guidelines, which are based on experience and research of what will help you to get ahead in your career.

So what should you wear if working for a small company, rather than a large one? Small companies form and prosper off the backs of a few dedicated people willing to wear many hats. Because everyone is expected to ‘muck in’ as needed, the image of employees needs to be easier, less severe than in larger organisations. If you are the Managing Director, you will get the extra effort from your staff if they recognise that you are `one of them’ in a sense, that you are approachable, as well as being ‘in- charge’.

Women running their own companies need the authority of wearing a jacket every day but can team this with dresses or skirts and blouses. The matching jacket and skirt suit is ‘heavy-duty’ in small companies, and might better be reserved for meetings with your banker or the board — at which it becomes the essential wear.
