Colour is where we, as Image Consultants, begin when advising women on how to make the most of themselves. Colour not only affects how healthy and attractive you look, but also affects how you feel.

You probably have at least one or two colours in your wardrobe that make you look and feel like death warmed-over. Every time you put on a particular jacket or dress, you sigh and reach for your blusher and lipstick. The colour seems to drain you. It simply wears you.

Also, when you open your wardrobe, can you see any relationship between the colours? Just look at the colour families you have assembled there. Do you play it safe with lots of the same shades? Or is your wardrobe a veritable riot of colour, with lots of items seeming to scream for attention, not wanting or able to work with anything else?

Fashion HouseFace up to it: as a busy working woman you can’t afford to look miserable, overwhelmed or insignificant in the wrong colours. Nor do you need the hassle of trying to mix and match things that you bought separately, just hoping they’d go with something you already had — only to be bitterly disappointed. What you need is a system to make you look wonderful, to unclutter your wardrobe and to make shopping a snap.

Colour Yourself

Millions of women (and men) have turned to Color Me Beautiful for advice on finding their best colours. We analyse what is special about your colouring — your natural skin tone, eye and hair colour — and advise you on which one of 12 colour palettes will make you look your best. We use the seasons of the year to describe people, the Complete Style Guide from the Color Me Beautiful Organisation, the twelve seasonal types (there are three types within each of the four seasons) are presented in detail.

Here I’ll simply give you a basic understanding of how to develop a working wardrobe, using a personal colour theme.

Define your own Clothing Coloring

Take a look at yourself in the mirror without any make-up, and with a bare neck and chest. How would you describe your colouring? Forget what you looked like when you were younger, and concentrate on your present colouring — unless you colour your hair, in which case consider the colour it is naturally.

Would you say your colouring is strong and deep? Women with dark hair and eyes fit into this category, and look wonderful in black and bold colours, such as red, purple, emerald green and royal blue. Or are you, by contrast light and delicate, almost translucent, in colouring. Blue-eyed blondes, and some women with very light grey hair are most suited to lighter colours. Then there are the women who project a real warm and golden glow. The redheads, women who freckle easily look wonderful in warm shades. So do the women with mid-brown hair that often has reddish highlights. Their opposites are the rosy and cool types, who have pink undertones to the skin, and no real warmth in the hair, which can be a beautiful grey to mid- or mouse-brown. Other women are best described as bright and clear; what you notice is the contrast between their usually dark hair, bright eyes and clear skintone. And finally, there are women who usually say they are ‘mousey.’ They know a lot of bright colours are unkind to them. Their colouring is soft and muted and so too should be the colours they wear.

On the my other posts are examples of the different wardrobe options and make-up colours based on these six dominant types of colouring. Please note that I have not recommended specific colours for your foundation liquid/creme, as this is too individual; some colours are worn by many seasons. It seemed best therefore to limit advice to colour cosmetics such as lipsticks and eye-shadows. See which description of a type fits you best. Don’t be swayed by the wardrobe that most nearly resembles your present one, as you may be dressing in colours that really aren’t making the most of your natural colouring.
