When I ask an audience of women what it takes to look terrific at work every day, I am greeted by responses that generally mean: you need lots of time and money.

I assume that you have limits on both — either because you’re busy with your career, or working just as hard at home, or possibly doing both — that you probably don’t have much time to read magazines, cruise the shops to see what’s in fashion or search out pieces to co-ordinate with your wardrobe. No. You probably have only a couple of hours every month to plan and to shop for your wardrobe and only minutes every day to put it together. You may also have a tight budget, particularly if you’re just returning to work after starting and caring for a family.

Think about the investment side of your image. You have lots of demands on your take-home salary — or you will have, once you get it — and your image can often fall way down the list of priorities. In fact, your image should be high on your list and be planned into your annual and monthly budgets. If you look as if you’re ready to go places, the chances are that you will, and will be earning more money before too long. Think of the money you do spend from time to time, on replenishing your wardrobe — a pair of shoes here, a jacket there, some earrings and so on. If you kept tabs on how much you spent on this kind of ‘drip-feed’, unplanned and unbudgeted shopping, you might be shocked.

Your new goal will be to plan your wardrobe as you plan other investments, and to stop wasting money on ad hoc items that never work with what you already have. The starting point is to discover what suits you, then to assess your existing wardrobe to see if it measures up and finally, to develop a shopping priority list.

Let’s begin by seeing how well your present image measures up.

Does your Image Measure up?

1. Do you spend less than 15 minutes getting ready for work in the morning (not including a shower)?
2. Do you wear earrings every day?
3. Do you go to the hairdresser at least every six to eight weeks? Ideally, every four weeks?
4. Does your hair require more than 10 minutes each day to look terrific and appropriate?
5. Do you wear coloured nail varnish which matches your outfits and/or lipsticks?
6. Do you manicure your nails weekly?
7. Do you wear make-up every day to work or only when you go for an interview?
8. When you sit down, does your skirt ride up several inches?
9. Do you touch-up your make-up at all during the day?
10. Do you know the difference between 5 and 20 denier?
11. Is your wardrobe mainly comprised of navy, grey and other neutral colours?
12. Do you wear a belt with your skirts (even if they don’t have belt loops)?
13. Do you know your most flattering skirt lengths for business?
14. Do you know which styles make you look most trim?
15. In the summertime, do you wear sleeveless dresses and blouses to keep cool?
16. If you are petite, do you wear high heels to look taller?
17. Are all your work shoes stored away in the wardrobe on shoe trees?
18. On a day when you have an important meeting, do you dress differently?
19. Do you have a suit/dress and accessories — a special look — ready in the wardrobe for business dinners?
20. Are your shoes, handbags/attache or brief-case and watch of good quality that projects your position and your success?
