Above or Below Average Size, Wearing Tips: get ready of Pulse Size

Women who are not average in size can have enormous challenges in finding clothes to look good at work. America is heaven for these ‘out- sizes‘, with stores at every price point catering for women of all shapes and sizes. Outside the States, the average-sized woman is determined by each country’s fashion industry. She and her lucky friends a few sizes smaller or larger are the ones with the most choice. In Germany, tall women do very well, while the petite ones and those of average height but overweight have difficulty. In France, every woman is expected to have small bones and be average to short; so the tall and the heavy have nowhere to shop. In Britain, where almost 50 per cent of the population are over a size 16 and under 5ft 4 inches, the industry surprisingly caters for an ‘average’ woman two sizes smaller and two inches taller, so most British women have difficulty in getting things that fit properly.

With fashions for larger and smaller women being harder to find, here are some extra tips for those who are not ‘Ms Average’, but who need to — and can — look successful.

Large Women

You can’t afford to settle for clothes that ‘make do’. With the prevailing prejudice against those who are overweight, you need to do everything you can to look healthy, energetic and professional.

Wearing the colours from your seasonal palette can help on all counts. See if your own wardrobe contains the shades that bring out the best in you, that focus attention to your face. Be bold in your colour choices for blouses, jackets and scarves, and opt for neutral and deeper tones for skirts and trousers.

Simplicity in style is most effective for you. Avoid distinguishable patterns in suits (jackets, skirts and blouses), choosing plain, quality fabrics in your best colours. Attractive patterns should be reserved for your blouses or scarves. Use striking accessories like brooches, earrings or a printed shawl draped over one shoulder.

Keep the cut of your clothes loose and elegant. Store away any blouses, jackets and skirts with straining buttons or fastenings until you are that size again or, if you are happy with your present size, regardless of dimensions, let others know it by wearing attractive outfits to project confidence in who you are. Resolve to sell quality garments that no longer fit to one of the many ‘thrift’ shops now opening up on local high streets. Failing that, give them away to a smaller friend, or a charity shop.

All apply to you, as they do for the averaged size women. The colour, quality and fit of your clothes are more important than the style. Hence, worry less about being at the cutting edge of fashion and concentrate instead on looking appropriate, elegant and timeless.

If rethinking your size, and possibly considering a diet and exercise programme, in the meantime look your best every day by paying extra attention to your grooming. Treat yourself to a new hairstyle or hair colour (only going so far as to enhance what is or was natural) and wear perfect make-up every day. Your colleagues and clients will be so dazzled by your face that they won’t ‘size you up’. The following guidelines on clothes to try, or avoid, should also help.

Pulse Size What to try

  • Easy jackets and tops that end below your widest point, e.g. under your bottom or longer.
  • Unconstructed jackets like the ‘cardigan’ style jacket.
  • Tunic tops, loose waistcoats, or smart overblouses in substantial, not flimsy, fabric in lieu of jackets.
  • Solid dark colours on your lower half. Your brightest `personality’ colours near your face.
  • Vertical patterns, e.g. pin-stripes.
  • Bold patterns in blouses and scarves.
  • Loose-fitting clothes.
  • Long jewellery to create vertical lines.
  • Bold accessories balance best with your size.
  • Darker toned hosiery.
  • Substantial shoes with a modest, stacked heel are best, e.g. the classic court.

Pulse Size What to avoid

  • Any waist definition, such as found on fitted jackets and dresses.
  • Patterns on your lower half.
  • Bulky texture. ‘Fat fabrics’ such as mohair, loose knit, heavy tweeds will make you look fuller.
  • Light colours except in blouses.
  • Horizontal patterns or defining features.
  • Dinky, ‘twee’ patterns. Anything too snug.
  • Chokers and short necklaces define the width of your neck, which you might not want.
  • Tiny accessories make you look larger.
  • Light or ’suntan’ hosiery. Flat shoes or stilettos.
