The Strong Neutral Suit, Versatile Investment

Few of us can afford to clear out our existing wardrobe, so let’s think about what you already have in your collection, and see if you have suits and outfits that are fulfilling all your needs.
Every woman needs a suit that sets the stage for her to be taken seriously. There will be occasions when you feel underconfident, or need to project your professionalism to an audience who may not yet value your contribution. And there will be times when you need to let folks know who’s in-charge, that is, YOU!!
Hence, this suit is all about gravitas. Choose the most sober, deep neutral that you can wear without looking too boring, severe or washed- out. Charcoal, navy, olive, a rich burgundy, plum or mahogany are all good possibilities.
This suit will look strongest, yet conservative, if worn as a matching set. When you want to soften the look, try contrasting, toning or patterned skirts.
To play safest and to project the most authority, team it with a blouse in your white (soft, pure or ivory). However, a pastel blouse with just a hint of colour will be more feminine and probably more flattering. On occasions when you don’t need to be at the helm, you can brighten-up the look with more colourful blouses and prints.
Choose a jacket design that will accommodate many different necklines. One without lapels would set off blouses with high collars, and could either have a simple jewel or V-neckline — also allowing you to tuck pretty printed scarves inside for variety.
This power suit will look most strong if teamed with a confident brooch and smart earrings.
The Light Neutral Suit
For spring and summer wear, you will need suits that are as versatile as your navy, olive, burgundy and charcoal ones but lighter, and more welcoming while still looking professional. Increasingly now, we are offered wonderful multi-purpose colours, such as ivory, stone, taupe, pewter, camel and cocoa brown.
Any woman, regardless of her colouring, can wear stone or taupe provided that she balances it with a terrific colour from her palette. For example, Deep and Clear women might wear taupe with black, red, purple or royal blue. Light and Cool women might try rose pink, soft fuchsia or lavender. Warm and Soft women can wear rust, moss green or turquoise with stone.
The lighter the suit, the better the quality required. You can cheat with navies, blacks and greys but rarely with a light colour. Be honest about the likelihood of being able to keep the suit clean. If you commute to work on public transport, ivory probably is a silly choice no matter how terrific it looks on you.
Thinking of ivory, there is a huge difference between ivory and white. The former is elegant and the latter rarely so, even if you work in a warm, sunny climate. An ivory jacket is particularly useful, as it will go with everything — plains as well as many weaves.
