The Coloured Suit, how to Dress properly with Colour?

In the last decade, certain colours have become so widespread for business women’s wear that they are accepted as neutral options. A red suit should feature in every working woman’s wardrobe (or, at least, a red jacket to team with your skirts). Red tells colleagues, managers and customers alike that you know who you are, and are prepared to stand your ground. Wear red to the next large meeting or conference you attend and see how more people come up to you and introduce themselves. In grey, you can attend functions and blend into the woodwork if that is what you wish. In red, people think you must have something to say — so be prepared to speak your piece!

Another great new neutral is purple, which comes in deep rich shades as well as softer, violet versions. Choose one that is neither too delicate (such as pale lavender) nor too electric (usually with really garish buttons). Again, any woman can wear purple. If you are a Deep and Clear woman, offset it with red, black or mango. If Light, Soft and Cool go monochromatic, teaming it with softer lilac or rose. If you have Warm colouring, try mustard or gold with purple — it’ll be a knockout on you.

Fashion HouseThe red or purple jacket of your suit will work with many other basic colours, both light and dark, in your wardrobe. And both are wonderful with black or grey trousers, which the most confident women already know.

The Trousers/Culotte Suit

The time has come for all women who know trousers or culottes are flattering on them (and want to wear them), to brave the workplace in these comfortable alternatives to the skirted suit.

As with a light coloured suit, you can’t cheat on quality when buying trousers or culottes, so don’t gamble away your chances of carrying off this sometimes risky look with any old pair of trousers teamed with any old jacket.

The Day to Evening Ensembles

There will be occasions when your working day does not end when the office closes but continues over dinner with colleagues or clients. Unlike men, few women socialise on business for the fun of it and aim to achieve positive results. After all, men can look totally acceptable in the same, smart, neutral suit they’ve worn all day, but we women have to make more effort if we’re to avoid what CMB consultants call the ‘left-over office’ look . . . the basic suit, cotton blouse, evaporated make-up, daytime accessories, etc.

If an evening event is planned, dress in the morning in something that is ‘transformable’ at 5 p.m. Bring along one of those wonderful, uncrushable georgette pleated skirts in a long length to make your day-time suit jacket look completely different. Wear a blouse with a slight sheen that will pick up the light.

Change your basic leather belt for one with beading, fake jewels or a gold trim. Add extra gold and/or pearl ropes. Replace your button earrings with a pair that dangle. Touch up your make-up — completely, not just some powder and lipstick. Finally, add a nice scent — it will make you feel special and put you in the right mood for a social, albeit still business, evening.

Dress Alternatives

If you haven’t discovered the ease and comfort of wearing simple dresses in lieu of skirts and blouses under jackets or on their own, then now is the time to do so. For women of every shape and size there are terrific options in basic plain colours as well as patterns.

Dresses are for days you don’t need to look ‘in-charge’. They are terrific for staff meetings, for working with colleagues, and for brainstorming sessions.

The simpler the design of the dress, the more you can change its look by adding a belt or scarf, wearing a brooch or chains, coordinating with different jacket lengths and styles.

Choose the fabric carefully. Many are too flimsy and clingy for the office (especially some knits, jerseys and silks).
