Petite women in business can have a hard time establishing a presence due to their small stature. They might be human dynamos but can give the opposite impression if they dress in a way that emphasises both their sex and diminutive stature.

Through colour, you can project presence and strength. Use the deepest and the boldest colours in your seasonal palette, regardless of your personality, to look more substantial and positive. Sweet pastels project vulnerability and will ensure you get passed over every time you wear them. Neutral colours in small but ‘business-like’ patterns, such as pinstripes, houndstooth, Prince of Wales checks, are preferable to florals or anything too feminine. Using one colour or monochromatic blends of one colour (for example, toning shades of blue) can help to create an illusion of greater height.

Show your legs! Long skirts, no matter how chic, current and comfortable, simply swamp you. Trousers suits often work well on petite women projecting a ‘pseudo-macho’ confidence without really threatening the boys. How can you at 5ft 2inches?

Avoid twinky accessories and details, such as lace or bow collars, antique dangling earrings or tiny, insignificant brooches. You do have to be careful not to appear that you are being worn by your accessories rather than vice versa — they must be in scale — but they must also be significant.

A modest heel will enhance your natural stature but don’t ever try to fake extra inches — because you won’t succeed — in stilettos; small women tottering along in ridiculously high heels are a comical sight. You can’t make a strong entrance in such styles and you risk making a complete fool of yourself if you fall in them.

Finely-woven, ‘tight’ fabrics.

If thin, layer loose-fitted components; for example, a blouse, waistcoat then a jacket.

Modest patterns.

High confidence colours in jackets, suits and dresses — your red, blues, purples, etc.

Loose, overscale jackets which will swamp you.

A lot of bulk and texture.

Excessive shoulder pads.

Very bold or contrasting patterns can overwhelm your small stature.

Very light or very dark colours, head to toe.
