Sunglasses, Dresses, Sandals, Beach, Stylish Fashion, this Summer Madness, what will Fit best?

Something strange happens as soon as the sun begins to shine, signalling the beginning of summer. Sane women can lose their professional sensibilities and reveal a different image from the one they have projected for the major part of the year. This transformation is often most pronounced in northern climates with brief summers. In others, with reasonably moderate to warm weather for many months or all year round, this delirium doesn’t seem to set in in the way it does in countries like Britain, Germany and Scandinavia.

A warm day seems to signal a licence to strip off the essential layers of a woman’s ‘business armour’. Off come the tights, on go sandals, open- toed shoes or, even worse, white shoes! These first signs of ‘summer madness’ are followed by bare arms, low cut blouses and sundresses under jackets which are discarded at some point during the day, leaving the owners looking not only unprofessional but vulnerable. The smart tailored looks worn religiously throughout the rest of the year are shelved in preference for crease-prone linen, see-through blouses, rising hemlines, shorts, tank-tops, T-shirts. The damage many women do to their image in just these two or three short months every summer damages their prospects throughout the remainder of the year.

Fashion HouseMale colleagues don’t know what to say, how to react or where to look when this summer madness starts. My business booms every summer; I receive dozens of calls from personnel officers asking if a consultant could please come in to discuss image with the women, and would we please tell them not to wear sundresses and sandals to the office. These calls come from the large multi-nationals as well as the small companies.

My advice is that as soon as it gets hot, try to stay cool, in every sense of the word. Do not read the women’s magazines for advice on what fun you can have, in looking great yet keeping cool. The girls who are doling it out work in a highly creative, informal environment where they have the freedom to wear halter tops, denim mini-skirts and Lycra dresses to the office. But you work in the real world, where you need to take your image seriously all year round. Because if you don’t, why should anyone else?

If you live in a climate that is sunny and warm for a good portion of the year, no doubt your business world hardly notices any transition in image. Your clothes are doubtless lighter both in fabric and colour, but your offices are air-conditioned, which makes the wearing of hosiery expected and comfortable. However, in countries with very brief periods of warm weather, many offices do not have air-conditioning and can become quite unbearably hot. This is what leads to such bizarre dress. But the men don’t react to the discomfort by dressing in shorts and T- shirts. So why do women?
