Your investment in a coat will be a major one which can put other purchases on hold for many months, so you must think and plan what you need and want before you even enter a store to buy one.

When skirt hemlines start fluctuating you can have real problems selecting a coat that will work with everything . . . but it must. So decide what hemline is best for you and get a coat that accommodates that particular length. Nothing looks more shabby than a coat that is too short for a skirt or dress, although a long coat over a shorter skirt is quite acceptable.

Once the coat length is settled, consider the desired weight. If you travel by public transport you need more warmth — such as a wool or wool and cashmere blend will provide — than if you travel by car. If you are a walker you will need a coat that is lightweight but still warm and capable of protecting you from the unpredicted shower. Some micro- fibres will suit your needs best.

When it comes to colour, splash out! You don’t need to stick to a safe neutral such as black, tan or navy. Cheer yourself and everyone you meet with a lovely shade that will brighten up the dull mid-winter landscape, but be smart and opt for mid to deep shades rather than light ones that require regular cleaning.Fashion House

A macintosh or raincoat might be a more versatile investment than a woollen coat, particularly if you live in an inclement climate. Today you can find dashing yet totally serviceable, wet-proof designs to see you through the worst weather.

Always try coats on when you are wearing a suit jacket underneath - and still allow room for layering if necessary. For example, if you decide to invest in one terrific raincoat it should be roomy enough also to accommodate an extra sweater, even under your suit jacket, if needed in mid-winter to keep you warm.

Over the years develop a coat wardrobe of varying lengths, weights and colours, to see you through rain and shine in style. Check your coats regularly to see that they look their best. Replace lost buttons, be sure the hem is even and repair any fraying, even inside . . . this can occur, for example, at the armpits, which take great strain if the coat is a bit snug.

If you have a coat that is still wearable but you find it boring, consider the following ideas for giving it, and you, a new look.

  • Change the buttons for bright new ones of good quality gilt, bone, or a contrasting colour
  • Add a colourful shawl or scarf from your collection, to make it look different every day
  • If it is a belted style, use a leather belt rather than the one that came with the coat
  • Wear a large, attractive brooch
  • Draw attention from the coat by wearing with it a terrific fedora, beret or floppy felt hat
