Your objective will be to wear styles and sizes that are comfortable and require no fuss to keep in place. You know those straight skirts that look so great when you try them on but as soon as you sit down require constant tugging to keep them from riding up your thighs. A skirt can rise slightly, provided it didn’t start out too short, when you sit but you shouldn’t need to be consciously worrying about it all the time. If you are, it is probably too short or too tight.

Be honest about your side view in skirts. If your tummy and bottom are curvy, a skirt without darts is unforgiving and looks unattractive. You will look chubby even if you aren’t. If you retain fluid during the month, try shopping then, to be sure that you get a fit that is bearable on those regular days when you need extra space.

Fashion HouseIf you notice horizontal lines stretchmarks’) across the front of your skirts then the fit is wrong. Waistbands that curl over when you are seated look terrible. Hide any you might have presently under a belt and next time you shop for a skirt choose a different waist, i.e. one with softer gathers and a better fit. If the problem is caused by the fact that you are short-waisted, look for a skirt without a waistband, or a very narrow one.

Length is a matter of taste, fashion and proportions. Fortunately, the fluctuations are less frequent in fashion today and women do have a choice so consider first and foremost what is flattering on you. If your legs aren’t an asset, minimise attention there by wearing longer, easy hemlines toned-in with matching hosiery. If you are short but also have unattractive legs you know you need to show more leg just to look balanced. Try a hem just below the knee, where your leg naturally indents, and finish with deeper (but not opaque), toning hosiery. Tulip- or bellshaped skirts are more flattering and slimming than straight, boxy styles. A-line skirts make all women look shorter and wider.

Taller women look great in longer lengths but need to be careful when it comes to volume. Wide, full skirts don’t look professional no matter how flattering or fashionable. If you like them long be sure the balance is right; that is, that all the attention isn’t drawn to below your waist.

When considering a longer length skirt for work, always walk around the fashion floor of the store wearing it, to see what happens when you move and whether it will be manageable through your daily obstacle course. Some styles allow very little movement and you’ll find yourself limited to taking ‘baby steps’ all day. Other longer styles can twist around or creep up your legs.

Very full, long skirts are too ’social’ and relaxed for the office. It’s near impossible to look commanding in a full, swirling skirt. If you love long, easy skirts for their comfort as well as their style, try ones cut on the bias, which will give you the movement without the volume.
