In the summertime, remember that you need to maintain the same professional standards that you displayed during the rest of the year. This can easily be achieved if you buy the same garments but in light fabrics. I know this may sound all too obvious, but it bears repeating as many women really do think that the summertime grants them liberties to wear garments designed as leisure-wear.

A lightweight suit, a dress and jacket, or a blouse, jacket and matching or co-ordinating skirt or trousers are more appropriate. Dresses that are ’substantial’ in their own right, that is, a coat dress, shirtwaister or chemise in a medium weight, not a clingy or sheer, fabric are acceptable on their own when you are working at your desk. But remember, for any meeting, you need to attend wearing a jacket and discard this only when your superiors do so, or you are invited to do so if you wish.

Fashion HouseChoose fabrics with very high percentage of natural fibres, but containing a minimal blend of a man-made material such as micro-fibres, rayon, polyester or nylon which helps prevent wrinkling and are machine- or hand-washable. Blouses and dresses in natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk and cool wool can usually be worn only once in warm weather. Check also to see whether the care label stresses dry-cleaning only because this is not only expensive but impractical for women who travel extensively.

Wear low-denier hosiery at all times on business. Number 5, 7, or 10 denier are very comfortable in tights, even more so in stockings or holdups which allow more ventilation. There is a very wide range of soft neutral shades available now, and it is an easy matter to find appropriate ones to tone in with your outfit — taupe, pale beige, soft ivory, slate-grey, and so on.

Select blouses with, at minimum, a short or capped sleeve; never wear sleeveless ones in the office unless you keep your jacket on all day. No matter how trim and well-toned your arms may be, bare armpits do little to project professionalism. Again, the men don’t get away with it, so why should you?

In shoes and accessories, choose comparable styles and quality to those you wear during the rest of the year, but in lighter colours. Taupe, pewter and light grey are a welcome relief from the dark navy, black and brown worn so often in winter. Also, coloured shoes to tone with outfits are more acceptable in the summertime than in winter; for example, blue, red or purple. The only colour that ’shoots you in the foot’ is white. At any price, by any designer, white shoes are tacky and incapable of projecting success.
