In the last few years City Shorts have been proffered by the fashion pundits as a nice alternative for working women in the summertime. The only problem with these ‘suits‘ is that unless the jacket is quite long and kept on all day, the look is too casual for work. Few women look elegant in shorts, regardless of their figures, and even in the most expensive silk or linen. When shorts wrinkle, as they invariably do, it is not a pretty sight. So, don’t be swayed by summer fashion features in the magazines touting these as an option. They aren’t. The only exception would be if you work in a very relaxed office environment and/or live in a warm climate.

Culottes are another item men have definite opinions about; generally never very positive. Often, the stores offer stunning culottes in plain or patterned fabric teamed with smart jackets, so they are effectively a suit. The key is not to have too much volume in the culottes and for the fabric to be very good quality. Cheap culottes don’t fool anyone that they are anything but cheap, whereas you may get away with an inexpensive skirt worn under a jacket.

Larger women, particularly those with heavy thighs, find culottes more flattering and comfortable than trousers and skirts. If considering this look, ask yourself: ‘Can I smarten it up with accessories to look strong enough to give a presentation to a small group?’ If the ‘culotte look’ is only good enough for behind the desk, it will be of limited use and not good enough to present the consistently successful image that you want and need.

Sexy and City Dresses

In the last few years, dresses have become the welcome alternative to the skirt and blouse under a jacket. Simple shifts in beautiful colours and fabrics under an unconstructed cardigan-style jacket are both easy to wear and comfortable. Against such a simple backdrop, you can add a striking necklace or a mixture of pearls and gold chains with earrings and look terrific. The `Dress-Suit’ also takes your business day wear into the evening most successfully.

Like all other items in your wardrobe, the fit of your dresses is very important. A dress only looks elegant and businesslike if it is slightly loose, not figure-hugging. This is why you should choose fabrics of substance, such as wool, wool and cotton blends, linen, tightly-woven knits, challis, etc. for dresses you want to be able to wear without a jacket.

The best style for a dress you intend to wear without a jacket is the coatdress, which is tailored to look finished all on its own. A simple chemise can also be worn alone if well accessorised, and looks even more complete with a shawl (which acts like a jacket).

With lighterweight dresses of silk, viscose, rayon or jersey, always wear a jacket; otherwise, there is simply too little fabric between you and your body not to be distracting when you are working with men. A cardigan, as opposed to a knit jacket, with a dress is not smart enough for business wear.

Sexy and City Undies

Today’s undergarments provide wonderful, supportive foundations to help any figure. From control-top tights to lightweight and comfortable `girdles’, there is no reason why any woman not in prime condition can’t look wonderful in her clothes. But if your bra doesn’t fit or your panties are too small, however trim you are, and however expensive your clothes, you will look awful!

Have you been properly measured for your bra? Quite often, when a woman is properly measured for a bra, she discovers she has been wearing the wrong size. The difference in fit and comfort in wearing the correct size is amazing, so, if you haven’t been measured recently, why not go along to the lingerie department of a good store and see if you are wearing the right bra.

Panties that seduce, generally create the worst `pantylines’ under skirts and trousers. You know, those sexy, silky numbers that defy gravity. For every day, you want panties that are comfortable around the leg and waist, and cover your entire bottom. The smoother the fit the better. So when buying yours be sure to allow for possible shrinkage in the dryer.

Also, take a good look at your rear view in a triple mirror and if your buttocks are less firm than they once were, do invest in a ‘girdle’, at least until you can get back into shape with some spot exercises. Nothing is more unprofessional and self-destructive in the workplace than a pair of jiggling buttocks under a skirt.

Finally, if your skirts and dresses are not lined it is advisable to wear an underslip to help retain their shape and prevent the skirts clinging to your legs and riding-up when you walk. If you wear varying length skirts get one slip to serve the short hemlines and another for the longer lengths.
