Are you a woman who wears one colour with most of your wardrobe? If so, you aren’t looking as sophisticated as you could. In most cities and towns, in most countries, hosiery is available in a wide range of textures, colours and fits so that every woman should be able to find a good brand to complete her look for work.

Some supermarket brands or ones purporting to fit any size can look horrible, making some legs look like artificial limbs, and they can be very uncomfortable. My clients moan that buying expensive hosiery is like pouring money down the drain because their tights often expire after one wearing (even upon opening the package!). But if you keep your nails and hands smooth, and are careful in laundering your hosiery there is no reason why tights should not last for many months. The key is to buy quality, to get the right fit and to select the right blend of fibres that are hardwearing (for example, with Lycra).

Fashion HouseGetting tights to last is one challenge; the other is getting them to look good. Here’s where you need to know your deniers, that is, the appropriate weight for comfort and to compliment your look. Here’s a guide to what to look for:

  • 5, 7, 10, 12 denier: Lightweight for summertime. Hot climates, hot offices
  • 15-30 denier: Medium weight, for air-cooled offices
  • 30-60 denier: For wintertime. There is nothing heavier in opaque than 60 denier.

In selecting colours don’t aim to contrast with your outfit (for example, wearing white or coloured tights) but to tone in with your skirt, dress or trousers, and with your shoes. So, if you are wearing a navy skirt and navy shoes, beige legs would stand out and break up your look; the best choice would be a sheer navy or a blue-grey. If your skirts and shoes are warm-toned then natural coloured tights or beige are nice. Never try to create the impression of having a tan by wearing ’suntan’ hosiery. It never works and cheapens any business look. Patterned hosiery, apart from designs so subtle as to be indistinguishable, has no place in business.

A final note on problem legs. For large, unshapely or marked legs (such as noticeable veins or scars) darker tones are best. For very slim legs, lighter colours create more ‘weight’ and ’shape’.
