Disposable Shoes Mentality

Many working women have a ‘disposable shoe’ mentality, that is, they buy one or two pairs of shoes, wear them to death for a few months then throw them away and buy replacements. Generally, they are inexpensive shoes which tend to look slightly beaten up by the third wearing, even if well-polished. They just don’t hold their shape like a more expensive model, partly due to the fact that they are usually unlined — and often synthetic.

This emphasises the importance of buying quality because good quality not only projects your success, how much you value yourself and your job, but is also better value for money. My ‘disposable shoe’ friends probably spend more on shoes over a year than others who buy better quality and they never experience the joy of looking wonderful and feeling comfortable.

You should have about five pairs of good quality shoes to wear with your business clothes. They don’t need to be the same in style or boringly safe. Have some variety in, say, two pairs, but with the majority able to work well with any suit. Buy only calf leather or suede for work. In the summer, don’t succumb to open-toed, or sandal styles or anything in shiny or patent leather. These styles and materials would weaken your professional image.

Find a good manufacturer/label whose sizes and styles are comfortable on you. We have all at some time experimented with unknown brands and qualities and lived to regret the purchases every time we wear them or because we find we cannot wear them. You can pay a lot of money for poor quality but you can never pay a little and get more (unless you know your way around the wonderful leather outlets of Milan).

No matter if you spend £100 on a pair of shoes today, most of your purchases will require a cobbler’s attention before wearing. Heels and upper soles are so thin that if you wear them you risk damaging the upper part of the shoes. Replace the heels with quality leather or rubber as well as the toes or entire soles to ensure their longevity. Also treat any suede or fabric shoes (not a recommended investment) with a weather- or water- resistant spray before wearing. Nothing is as heartbreaking as getting caught in the rain on the first day of wearing new shoes, and have them acquire a permanent water-mark that cannot be concealed even by the most assiduous cleaning or polishing.

Store all your shoes in a cupboard or wardrobe between wearings, using shoe trees to help them keep their shape. Resting shoes for two to three days before wearing them again will allow the leather to recuperate and will help your shoes to last much longer.

Boots should be worn only for practical reasons — either mid-winter to protect your feet from cold or snow — or during torrential rain. (In New York you need ‘rubbers’ — rubber boots — when it is stormy.) But during inclement weather always keep a pair of normal shoes in the office to look your best. When boots are very much in fashion, try to resist them unless you work in a particularly relaxed environment.

If you habitually walk a good distance to and from the office, by all means be sensible and change your smart business shoes for something more sturdy and comfortable. But don’t forget to substitute more appropriate shoes once in the office.
